Web Browser Gadget

IE Pageholder Tab imageappleMods Sidebar
If your browser supports a 'sidebar', then you can keep a short menu of appleMods site sections handy. If you don't want to (or need to) download all the library files, then you can keep a handy link to the library downloads section and grab a mod when you need one. As we add functionality to the site we will update the sidebar automatically.

Bookmark - Drag to your favorites bar.  Drag icon or link to your favorites, pageholder, sidebaror other link manager to add the appleMods Sidebar.

There are usually a number of ways to add a bookmark to the "sidebar" of a web browser. Check your browser's doc for more info. (Note: In Internet Explorer, this is called 'Page Holder' and if you are displaying the left-side tabbed browser bar, then you can open the Page Holder tab and either drag a link into the list or you can click the 'Add' button in the Page Holder pane.)

 Mailing List

To join the mailing list, or to maintain your subscription, use the moDev List Maintenance Page.

Who should join? This list is intended for developers of libraries, implementors of libraries and those interested in sharing discussion on programming and technical aspects of the Loader system.

 Forums
Forums are established on the SourceForge server, but performance is a bit slow in tests, so we've taken the forum offline. The consideration is to move the forum to a new server, and run phpBB. Update in the first quarter, so keep watch here.

Steering Committee and Other Working Groups
Project Guidance
The overall project is guided with input from a volunteer Steering Committee -- professionals and experienced members of the scripting community.

The Steering Committee is described in further detail in the About section.

Working Groups
In order to achieve certain project goals -- one of which is the community management of a universal library archive -- and to share the management tasks of the project, we have formed several Working Groups, each with a chair-person to coordinate group activity.

The Technical Working Group is tasked with:

  • Evaluating the underlying code of Loader for OS 9 and OS X
  • Verifying submitted libraries wishing to be considered "Loader Compatible"
  • Evaluating and defining a method for libraries to expose their "dictionaries" in a human-readable form
  • Other such tasks as are related to the code-base of Loader and related tools

The TWG chair is Michael Terry, a member of the Steering Committee.

Other Working Groups which have been identified but do not yet have a permanent chair are:

Documentation Working Group
-- Task: Define a standard for documentation, for the auto-generation of documentation, and the machine parsing of documentation

Website Working Group
-- Task: Define and manage the roles and tasks associated with web site maintenance and user interaction, including the interface to search the command set of all available libraries and build a database of Library names and command names

Developer Resources Working Group
-- Task: Design and develop a comprehensive set of tools and utilities for use by Library developers and third-party application developers (including commercial developers) who wish to use libraries. Build on the existing set of tools for the three most common script editors: Smile, Script Debugger and Script Editor 2.

Evangelism Working Group
-- Task: Develop a strategy to provide users and work-place script writers with all the tools they need to easily and quickly locate and use libraries. Also develop a general Public Relations strategy to communicate the benefit of a standard system of external Libraries for AppleScript.

Site Hosting
The appleMods II project is physically hosted at SourceForge.net, in order to foster the open source nature of the project and the Loader system developed by Hamish Sanderson and managed by Gary Wood. Some of the sever resources and data hosting are provided courtesy of the AccidentalTechie, a Macintosh workflow consultancy for non-profit and educational organizations, NGOs and similar groups. AccidentalTechie is hosted at NicheCrafters.com.

The appleMods Browser will let you select individual mods in the database and access their help pages (if available from the author.) You can also read a description of the mod and see any sample command usage that the author has supplied.

Developers: Do you want users to be able to access these features for your submitted mods? Then be sure to create these documents according to the Developer Submission Guidelines.

Over one dozen updated Libraries were released by Hamish Sanderson in November and December. You can see all of these on the new releases page.

 Support Topics
FAQ - Questions and Answers  Arrow - link to Questions and Answers
While not exhaustive, the FAQ does cover all of those general "what is this?" topics. Using libraries is not difficult for either the user or the developer. What can be difficult is that there is not universal standard method of filing and accessing these items.

That is exactly why the Loader was developed and why we hope to generate support for a "community standard" -- the Loader Compatible system. The FAQ discusses some of these ideas as well as the basics of what libraries or mods are. You can read more information about mods for other languages (like PHP, Perl, Python, Tcl) on the web.

Check out the FAQ and let us know if you have additional Questions and Answers to add. The FAQ is maintained in FileMaker Pro, then a new index is generated by using PageSpinner's FAQ Spinner.
